For weeks now they are stuck on the ship surrounded by nothing but water. Some Olympic games on the Arc come as a welcome change. Orpheus!

Happiness is short lived for Orpheus the singer, son of the Muse Calliope, as his young wife Eurydice dies on their wedding day, bitten by a snake. But Orpheus descends into the underworld to get her back and he moves Hades with his songs. He is allowed to take Eurydice back on condition that he does not look at her on the way through the realm of the death. But Orpheus cannot keep his promise and loses Eurydice for the second time. In his sorrow he retreats into the Thracian mountains, while Eurydice returns to the underworld. In place of the absent Orpheus, Eurydice is the main character of this play. We meet her as an ageing woman pondering her destiny in the underworld, wondering what could have been if she had lived a normal life married to Orpheus. This is the monologue of a mature woman, alternating between longing, irony, wit and rebellion – a woman who eventually capitulates in the face of love. Noted – The Life Stories of 24 Women from Basel City and Country, Limmat, May 2008, ISBN 978-3-85791-550-5 Their background, experience, opinions, professions and passions separate them, what connects them is a region. Each one of them went her own way – 24 women from the cantons of Basel and Baselland speak about their lives, their early years, their work, their husbands, children, their successes and failures, their worries and what made them happy. Gabrielle Alioth, Corina Lanfranchi and Katharina Tanner talked to these women, Annette Boutellier photographed them. From word and picture the portraits of 24 unique lives emerge, reflecting the history of the region in the last century as well. “Noted“ is part of a series of books containing women´s profiles published by the Limmat Verlag, Zurich, featuring women from the cantons of Lucerne, St. Gallen, Wallis, Glarus and Zug.
